Photo Sensors- Diffuse Mode

The PS line of Photo Sensors comes in several models making it easy to select the right sensor for your application.  Diffuse Sensors are a great choice for detecting parts or error-proofing. These can save space since no reflector or receiver is needed. These are easier to install than through-beam sensors or retro reflective sensors. 

Diffuse Photo Sensor

Diffuse Photo sensors have a receiver and emitter built into a single sensor head. A beam of light is transmitted from the emitter to the object being sensed and bounces back to the Receiver. This changes the state of the switch in the sensor. If no object is present the light continues onward and the sensor is not triggered. 

The switch can be changed from Normally Open to Normally Closed with an adjustment screw located on the top of the sensor. 

Choose from two beam diameter options.  The standard beam sensor is better for larger and porous objects and the micro-beam sensor is best for smaller objects or precise positioning of an object.  

The Micro Beam Photo Sensors have a small visible laser that makes it easy to position the sensor accurately. These are ideal for detecting small parts.

Each Sensor comes with a Transmitter and Repeater and includes brackets and screws for mounting. 

Choosing a PNP or NPN Sensor


The terms PNP and NPN refer to the type of transistor being used in the sensor. Fortunately, we only need to concern ourselves with how to select a sensor based on the way the sensor will be wired.

Sensors are switches that are open or closed based on some condition. This is true for prox switches, photo sensors, or any other sensors. Simply put they are all switches that are opened or closed based on whether they detect something or not.

So why would we select a PNP or NPN?

PNP (Sourcing)

If we want the switch to supply the + positive side of the power, we will select a PNP Switch. Remember PNP starts with P and it supplies the + Positive side of the circuit.

NPN Wiring Diagram

NPN (Sinking)

If we want to supply the -Negative side of the circuit, we will select a NPN switch. Remember NPN starts with N and it supplies the negative side of the circuit.
